Wave of Precision: Complex Architectural Structure for Outdoor Community Stage
Part of a multi-phased master plan for the City of Fremont, the Downtown Event Center and Plaza consists of a 13,400-square-foot community center and one-acre plaza located on the corner of Capitol Avenue and State Street. The recently constructed campus designed by Studios Architecture has quickly become the social heart of the city, serving as a burgeoning hub for gatherings, cultural events, and community celebrations.
Located adjacent to Silicon Valley, Fremont is the largest suburban municipality within the San Francisco Bay Area with a population of over 220,000 residents. Known for its innovation and growth, the city’s investment reflects its dedication to fostering community connections, public art, and inspiring spaces.
An outdoor stage prominently positioned in the plaza is defined by a unique architectural structure designed by SWA Group that is arguably a work of art itself. Built and installed by Crusader Fence, this striking yellow fence serves as more than a functional barrier; it makes a bold visual statement. With gracefully twisted pickets arranged in a wave pattern with radius complexities, the design embodies fluidity, creating a dynamic, engaging effect. The height of the panels gradually rises and falls, mirroring the motion of waves, adding both rhythm and movement to the structure.
The intricate design required an exceptional level of craftsmanship and precision to execute. Crusader Fence embraced this complexity where many others were reluctant to take on the project. Interpreting the ambitious vision of the architect, Crusader Fence provided the detailed designs, calculations, and solutions necessary to bring the concept to life. The unusually demanding project also required clear communication and collaboration across vendors and partners.
For each picket, twists, angles, and precise measurements had to be meticulously designed for project specifications and aesthetic flow, then adjusted to accommodate the nuances of poured concrete for a seamless fit on the platform. Components were engineered from Nucore multigrade steel for strength, weather resistance, and durability in anticipation of high-traffic public use and the corrosive properties of the coastal environment.
Steel components were hot dip galvanized, immersed in molten zinc for further protection from corrosion. This process was especially challenging, because excessive heat would distort the intricate twists that are central to the design. Crusader Fence ensured that every component met exact specifications before application of a vibrant yellow powder-coating. Full assembly took place at Crusader’s metal shop before installation onsite.
Beyond its head-turning aesthetics, the stage structure addresses the practical needs of public use. Considerations for egress, accessibility, and the integration of handrails and foot rails were incorporated into the design, ensuring safety and compliance with regulations. The result is an iconic architectural element that demonstrates Crusader Fence’s expertise with complex designs and delivery of exceptional, custom-built solutions.
For the City of Fremont, this bold, yellow fence stands as a defining feature of Downtown Event Center and Plaza. Crusader Fence is proud of our contribution to this vibrant gathering place for the entire Fremont community.
